While 750 words may seem limited, over the years contributors to Brevity have crafted essays in a staggering array of subgenres and styles outside of traditional memoir. Students may write from a question or a prompt, but length is this form’s only true constraint. A “ Brevity essay” is a piece of nonfiction composed of 750 words or fewer, in line with the Brevity submission guidelines. *From the version of “WPA Outcomes Statement for First-Year Composition,” which many FYW programs across the country base their curricula on.īrevity: A Journal of Concise Literary Nonfiction, first established in 1997, is credited with creating a widely-written form within the flash nonfiction genre. Below are four of my favorite flash nonfiction writing activities that work to satisfy a multitude of first year writing course outcomes such as developing Rhetorical Knowledge Critical Thinking, Reading, and Composing Writing Processes, and Knowledge of Conventions.* The urgency and immediacy of flash work also lends itself to on-the-spot in-class writing and revision activities. Assigning flash nonfiction in your introductory courses can be a great way to engage first year writing students, demonstrating important lessons about the relationship between concision and revision in the process. As an added bonus, students also tend to enjoy reading and writing their own short-but-true stories modeled after essays popular in online literary magazines like Brevity: A Journal of Concise Literary Nonfiction, Sweet: A Literary Confection, Cleaver, Tahoma Literary Review, and many others.Ĭontemporary composition curricula are designed to ensure that students are well-versed reading and writing within a variety of genres. From these low-stakes activities and writing exercises, students have the opportunity to craft texts in a more creative, self-expressive mode than standard analytical and argumentative essays allow. One of the more effective methods I’ve found is through assigning flash nonfiction in my composition courses, where flash nonfiction is defined simply as a true life story of 750 words or fewer. In early 2022, two brothers from Reading launched Wee Irish Pub, and told Patch news they were planning to launch a sports bar version called Wicked Tiny Boston Sports Pub.As a graduate teaching assistant who studies both creative writing and rhetoric & composition, I’m always looking for new ways to link the two disciplines in my pedagogy. ![]() Shannon and Queally aren’t the first duo to take on the tiny home-mobile bar business. The Wandering Druid has that same cozy, welcoming atmosphere that as soon as you sit down, you know you can relax and all will be well.” ![]() “There are a lot of visual similarities in terms of the color scheme and layout, but the feel of a place is harder to put your finger on. “That’s the biggest feedback we’ve got about the pub so far, that it actually feels like a true Irish pub,” Shannon said. Shannon said people have been most struck by how similar the mobile bar is to the Druid itself. A liquor license is not needed as long as hosts aren’t charging guests for alcohol, according to the business website. But the bar comes with taps for up to two kegs, and staff can be on hand to help set up and work the event. The Wandering Druid does not provide food or alcohol - that’s up to the hosts. The base rental fee for the mobile bar is $1,299 per day midweek and $1,699 on weekends and holidays. ![]() For extra seating and space, guests can purchase the “Beer Garden Package” for an additional cost. The mobile pub comes with indoor seating for up to 14 guests (plus standing room), refrigeration, a Bluetooth compatible speaker system, and an electric fireplace. The Wandering Druid has a dark green exterior and shiplap wooden walls that meet a maroon paint on the interior. It adds an incredibly personal touch to the pub and that was a hugely important factor to us going into the designing process.” ![]() “Some of them are old Guinness ads and the usual suspects you’d expect to find in an Irish pub, but the vast majority of them are old photos from home, posters of festivals from where we grew up, and even photos of family members. “It’s hard to imagine with it being such a small space, but there’s around 115 photos on the walls inside the pub,” Shannon said of the interior design. Shannon said they “couldn’t be happier” with how it came out. The co-founders, who are both originally from Doolin, Ireland, bought the trailer in August of last year. The Wandering Druid is an 8 foot x 16 foot miniature replica of the Cambridge pub that Shannon and Queally built themselves.
